Leopard cat - refers to cats of the ORDER Carnivore, FAMILY Felidae, and Genus Felis. Leopard cats are small, shy, nocturnal non domestic cats weighing in between 5 and 20 pounds at maturity. Leopard cats are indigenous to the jungles of southern Asia, India, China, Korea, and certain regions of the former Soviet Union.
The leopard cat is the true and only foundation cat for the domestic Bengal cat.It is our opinion that the leopard cat heritage is the essence of the domestic Bengal cat.
There are sects within the Bengal community that have attempted to distance themselves from the leopard cat heritage of the domestic Bengal cat, for a variety of reasons. These sects do not recognize the leopard cat as the foundation cat for the domestic Bengal breed. It is our opinion that these sects erroneously refer to first three generations of domestic Bengals as foundation cats for the Bengal breed.How can a breed be a foundation for itself?
If one were to breed a donkey with a horse, one produces a mule, not a foundation animal for the creation of the mule. Likewise, if one breeds a leopard cat to a Bengal cat or another domestic cat, a domestic Bengal cat is created with the very first generation. Mules are generally sterile, likewise most of the first three generations of domestic male Bengals are also infertile.
